America’s first Afro-Centric labyrinth was created through a partnership between Almetto Howey Alexander, a community leader, and my Uncle, the artist Tom Schulz. Ten years afterwards, it badly needed refurbishment. I collaborated with the YMCA and used a generous donation of materials by PROSOCO to update the space. I preserved the design by using a cement blade on an angle grinder to outline the shapes and patterns. That way the surface-applied painted symbols and geometry of the labyrinth would remain after the physical and chemical stripping required to allow for proper bonding and performance of the new pigments and sealer.
